The university can decide whether to let student take the academic leave for one year at a time or give the student an opportunity to take the academic leave in smaller amounts.
The student has a right to take the academic leave as the university has stated up to one year. An additional academic leave of two years can be taken due to health reasons. An additional academic leave for one year can be taken due to the military service and an additional academic leave until the child turns three to raise a child.
Several universities also allow to take an academic leave twice. The amount of subjects one can take during the academic leave varies in every university.

If the student takes the academic leave and he/she does not have the health insurance from work he/she can register oneself as unemployed and then have the health insurance during the academic leave.
